There are other V8s out there (and in there)!

The Bastard

Patrick McKiernan

Ahh...the 928. What a beautiful car! Porsche got everything right when they designed this marvel of modern technology. Yep, they got it right, but even "right" wasn't good enough for Porsche. As the model years continued, so did the developments and improvements. The motor increased in displacement and power. The brakes got larger and more powerful. Many other interesting changes appeared throughout the years as well, small ones like vacuum controlled door locks becoming the more reliable electric locks. Aerodynamically, the car was dramatically improved with the simple addition of spoilers, front and rear. Even the bumper covers morphed.

Yet some of us long for something just a little bit more. For many of us, it's this constantly unfulfilled desire to accelerate just a bit faster. Oh, wouldn't that be nice? Make the back of this seat try to shove on through my torso, please. Make me have to work to keep my face from pointing toward the roof of the car. Show that wanna-be in the next lane what the rear bumper cover looks like, but only for a short time as you approach the vanishing point. Why does that matter? Probably for the same reasons that there is this thing known as the SCCA? Face it. We're competitive by nature and fast cars help to quench our needs.

So, we begin the quest for more power. After a minimal bit of research, we find the super-exponential equation, which provides (some) power for (lots of) money. The slope of this curve would be a challenge for a Sherpa to climb! There is only one major factor which determines this slope, and it has Porsche written all over it. As long as you've decided to utilize the 928 motor, you will forever be at the mercy of the super-exponential curve.

OK…bite the bullet. What performance modifications are available for your car? This will depend upon the year and model. If your car is earlier than an '85, then it's not even chip-able. If you don't have a Euro model, you might opt for the Euro heads and cam, but have you priced them?  If your car is an '85 or later, you might start with a chip and a RMB. Sounds awesome now and pulls like never before, but still not hard enough.

No matter what modifications you do, you eventually wind up wanting more. You've become used to the currently enhanced acceleration and you begin to want more. It's just a basic need for some of us; we set goals, achieve these goals and then reach even higher. So in the end there really is no end short of  "the" end. Are
