What is the fair price for that 928? Brian Buxton surveys the real market.

928 Market Report

Brian Buxton

928 Owners and Aficionados,

Does it seem as if months have passed since the first Web issue of
928 Journal went on line? Where does the time go? (When I was sixteen, I never thought I'd even think that phrase!)

I expect everyone has had a summer filled with organizing garages, attending track events and concours d'elegance, participating in 928 OC and PCA events, taking cruises, and watching F1 races - I know I'm looking forward to the year 2000 Indianapolis Grand Prix!

For those of you who may be looking to sell, or upgrade from, your current 928, this 928 OC market report (assembled in April '99) is filled with good news. It looks as if warm weather is having a positive effect on 928 market prices!  1978 to 1986 cases have begun to appreciate by a few hundred dollars. S4 models from 1987 to 1990 are following the same trend, which is an excellent sign, considering the price drop they recently displayed. 1991 to 1995 models have lost value on the high end, but the good condition examples seem to have gained value (a sign that maybe the "garage queens" should be brought onto the roads and enjoyed by their owners). However, I can name five or six 928 GTSs that have recently brought over $60,000 retail. So, there are still buyers on the market who will pay whatever is required to take home the ultimate 928.

Overall, I see the 928 retail market as very promising in the summer of 1999. Dealer wholesale pricing is remaining strong, and my reference books showed a rise in 928 retail values across the board (
Excellence has not printed an updated 1999 market report for the 928, and I had to use their old numbers). Presuming a new Excellence 928 market report would show the same rise in 928 prices, I firmly believe that it would show the average values of all model year 928's as significantly higher.

Below is my report.

Car condition is defined as follows:

Excellent:  Near perfect, but not quite concours.
Good:  A weekend car or well maintained average condition daily driver.
Poor/Rough:  A car that runs and drives but has apparent flaws, not a total basket case.
