Help! Wiring question - I'm an idiot... was created by otisp1
Ok, long story short:
'85 32v 5-spd. Had a fire last October, right front corner at 14-pin connector was the epicenter. Fried all three harnesses, hoses, plastic etc. Got new (used) harnesses from Mark and Tom at 928 Int'l, lots of other parts from them and everybody else, etc. So, I have everything pretty much rehabbed, and almost ready to fire it up again.
BUT I'm an idiot and can't figure out where one last wire goes, on the engine harness. Branches off of the main harness near where the alternator wires do. Brown, I'm pretty sure, so it must be a ground? But I can't remember where to.

It may not be brown (or at least it may not have originally been brown).
Colors change in the engine bay - usually reds end up brown...
Where does it exit the harness and what else does it connect to.
You should have 2 similarly size red connections to the alternator main terminal (one goes to the starter, the other goes to the jump post...)

Yes, I was thinking that it may not have started brown, but the other reds are "redder" so I was thinking it was a brown. But I didn't remember there being a ground there.
I have the two reds to the alternator - I was pretty sure I got all the wires on the alternator correct.
This wire comes off the main harness just before where the alternator wires split off from the ones to the starter. Also have the oil pressure sender connected and the oil level wire connected.
I'm pretty stumped, I've replaced about a billion wires and I don't remember this one. I defer to you guys who have more 928 experience:confused:

In my opinion, that is definitely a ground wire. I'll compare what you've described to the harness on my S3 tomorrow if it is any help. Alan is the electrical guru, so I won't be surprised if he delivers an answer before I get a chance to look over my harness.

Awesome thanks. Appreciate any help. I do have another 85 as well but I'm still digging out of the driveway! I should be able to get it into the garage tomorrow so I can get under and have a look.

OK, it just got more confusing for me. I looked underneath my wife's, an '85 32v auto, and I can't find that wire on that car. So maybe a couple of other possibilities now:
1. Could it be a variation in harnesses or some kind of variation in years, maybe the harness is off of an 86?
2. This wire might normally branch off of the main harness behind the front engine cover, and it's just the way I have the harness positioned that has this wire so close to the alternator. Is there a ground on the engine harness at all?
