Rear Wheel Bearing was created by rluvsporsche
I need a rear wheel bearing replacement on my 87. I'm getting different quotes at local Porsche indy around Chicago suburbs. One gave me 1 1/2 hr. to R&R the bearing plus parts total $250 tax included. 2nd one 2 3/4 hours total $400 + tax. Does anyone know the right time to R&R the wheel bearing? Is this a difficult project to tackle? I was told it requires special tools. Thanks in advance.

Wow that is quite a differance in the quotes, eh?
The first one may even end up costing more depending on the labor rate.
I can not help you as far as what the job requires as I have not done one yet (knocks on wood)
I am sure that if you don't get an answer here you will get one over on RL.

The key is that it requires something like 300# of force to put in, not quite the simple straight forward task as replacing the front bearing. My recollection is that I paid @$300 to do one rear wheel bearing. So neither estimate sounds terrible or wonderful, but $250 is probably good if they do it right

If it needs 300# its probably press fit to the hub assembly. A guy I know working for the dealer wants $400 and his doing this as a side job. It’s probably a project left to the pro. I'll search and see if there are any DIY write ups for this.
