Ebay Steal?!?! You decide. was created by Kiln_Red
Picked up this complete engine off Ebay for a whopping $200.01. I plan on picking it up next weekend. It MIGHT cost me a $100 in fuel... :D

My plan with this engine is to swap it with the one currently sitting in my car while I make all the repairs and complete all the preventive maintenance tasks I want to do on it. Of course, the engine will, in fact, have to be in good condition as described for this to work as planned. $200 is just too cheap to pass on in any case. Stan suggested picking another engine up a while back. Seeming like a better idea all the time. :)

Here is a shot I snapped of my $200 4.7L SOHC 928 engine as it sat in the bed of the truck at the gas station. Looks remarkably clean and well maintained. It even has new injectors. Man, I got lucky. Planning on putting it in this upcoming weekend.

I know it. I've got a good feeling about it. But hey, for $200, I'll be happy with anything short of a thrown rod or cracked block. I'm not that worried about it. I just don't like going so long without driving the car. I figured going this route would buy me some time to rebuild the original engine the right way.

you can't beat that with a stick for $200. One thing though, looks like you might need a timing belt.

I've got a new Porsche belt on the way. I don't trust the Conti or the Gates.

Why? Porsche doesn't make them, they just slap their name on them and charge you more. I've used Conti on every TB job I've ever done with no problems ever, never heard of anyone post anything bad about them.

I have been using Gates as well with no issues at the present time.I have heard some don't like the Continental belts at all and Greg Brown in California who is a big Porsche race mechanic/engine builder only uses timing belts from Porsche.

I can stretch the Gates, pretty easily, by hand. The Conti definitely seems higher quality. I was unaware that Porsche didn't make their own belt.

Who does? Perhaps Continental? Porsche has just been the only one I have ever trusted.

If Greg has a preference then there is a valid reason for it.

The Conti belt is of lesser quality that the Gates belt, in the past, they both made the belts for Porsche. Gates are the only ones I'll put on a 32v car, and with the deal that Roger has with Gates, he gets them at an amazing price.

You also have option of the Gates racing belt too now.

Is the Gates racing belt worth the extra $$ for street usage??

Nope, not in my opinion. It is a much tougher belt, no stretching per se. Greg builds $20-$50k motors, and I understand his wanting to only use the Porsche belt. There is liability in that and he limits his by using only parts out of a Porsche box.

As such, I have some liability in that also, but I stick with the stock stuff (unless I'm doing work on some of Gregs motors) but will stick with the Gates belts on anything I touch. The racing belt is a great idea for those that are going to put the cars though some tough engine work. Regular street use, use the gates.

I will say that those that have the non-interferance engines, a Conti belt will be ok, but with the price that Roger has on the Gates, why spend more?

I have a Porsche belt that I got as a present last year. Someone earlier said that the Porsche belts were made by both Gates and Conti, but mine says Dayco on it right next to the Porsche part number. Did Dayco start making them, or am I reading something wrong here?? Also is this a good belt or should I get a Gates belt instead??

There were a few different manufactuers of belts. Use that one for the '78, Gates for your '86.5

Thanks Sean. Is that because of a difference in the belt of some kind, or just Gates is a better quality one, so use it on the interference engine??
