87 s4 no start was created by JerseyPhoenician
good evening,
87 s4 manual, had it for a few months. today was the first warm day (65 degrees), so i worked on it, tried to fire it up. no luck.
what i have done so far:
took out the CE panel, cleaned it, installed new relays, new fuses, cleaned it thoroughly.
Cleaned ALL grounds on the car, front to back, including the ground above the CE panel, in the trunk, in the front, in the battery area, replaced gound strap from engine to chassis , etc.... The car lit up like a christmas tree.
The car has been off the road for at least 16 years...
Fuel tank out, cleaned it, replaced the fuel strainer, fresh fuel lines in the back, new fuel pump and filter.
New battery.
INstalled new crank position sensor. was crumbled and the tach was not moving while cranking last month...
Rebuilt LH.
Car cranks, tachometer bounces, fuel pump buzzes. There is fuel at the rail, cracked the nut at the end of rail line, fuel gushed out.
No start. I sprayed carb cleaner, it fires up and idles for a few seconds, then dies.
Spray again and it fires then dies...dont want to over do it, as ether is not the best for combustion...
Fresh engine oil and filter.
Havent taken out the injectors.
Havent installed a noid light yet. this is how far ive gone on my car.
I have fuel at the rail and i have spark, because it fires on ether/carb cleaner.
So as of now, not sure if the injectors are firing, but i think that is the only reason why the car is not starting...
I will buy noid lights and check this week to see if the injectors are pulsing.
Any other ideas are welcome.
Thank you,
Sam

i unplugged the temp 2 sensor this morning, just in case. no start. i did not measure the resistance on each spade yet. still having coffee and trying to fire it up.
Ill head to the auto store and buy a set of noid lights today.
I will then peel the boots back on the injectors and try to find a short somewhere....

ok noid light installed, light bulb came on when ignition key turned to on.
Cranked and saw the light bulb pulsate while cranking.
So that leaves me with clogged injectors...
i have spark, i have fuel at the rail, fuel pump bizzes, i have pulse at the injectors, but no squirting im assuming.
It runs on ether, so its starving from fuel...
Car hasnt run in like 16 years or so.
Fuel tank refurbished, new Fuel pump, filter, CPS, LH, battery, grounds cleaned, groudn strap replaced, CE panel fresh, new relays...
DIdnt replace teh Temp 2 sensor.
Do i still need to do an intake refresh?
I will pull the injectors and clean them and see if that solves the problem.
Thanks,
Sam

Hello Sam,
Welcome to the club.
I'm pleased to hear that you found the no-start problem, you did a good diagnostic job ... totally plugged fuel injectors aren't a normal problem.
Have you changed out the fuel filter? It is located at the rear under a metal cover. There also either an in-tank fuel pump (mostly early CIS cars and later GT/GTS) or an in-tank fuel screen. With age, that in-tank screen can break apart and the fuel pump can suck in large enough chunks to cause problems ... the large fuel filter is post fuel pump so it doesn't catch those particles. The in-tank fuel pump can fail due to a broke hose that connects the metal collar and the pump itself. The in-tank pumps are very expensive if they can be located. I have photo documentation on that repair.
Extreme care must be used when removing the in-tank fuel pump or in-tank screen as the metal collar that the fittings screw to are fitted into the plastic tank and ANY torque can break the metal collar seal with the plastic tank and the tank will leak with no real way of repair - a replacement tank must be sourced.

Hello Rich and thank you for your kind welcome.
Fuel tank was out and cleaned, fuel filter and fuel pump were replaced. The fuel tank strainer in the tank was also changed.
Car would run on ether..
Got a LH from a friend, plugged it in, and removed the injectors which were all clogged..put new injectors and it runs great now, idles, etc...
Coming back from the dead after 17 years. took her on the highway and it runs good.
Fiddling with the throttle mechanism now, the throttle cable and the gas pedal cables...its not revving all the way up, my cables are old and stretched. Tried backing out the screw at the firewall then backed out some plastic screws at the throttle mechanism by the intake...
Most important, it came back to life...was sitting in a dirt field for 17 years, towed it home a few months ago and been working at it since...
Much different than my 83 928 manual..
Thanks again and talk soon.
