Hi,

I'm thinking about buying an early 928.  I have owned several 911s & 356s, not yet a 928.  I've researched the 928 and it intrigues me.  After looking at & driving several, my search is narrowed to the first generation 928, 5 spd.  My mechanical ability is limited. However, I have found 2 (!) separate mechanics to help. I prefer 928s with long ownership history.  I have found 1 with single ownership since late 80s.

2 things are holding me back from the purchase.  I would appreciate your advice.

1. The fuel filler door doesn't close flush with the body.  The gas gap / fuel filler neck prevents this door from closing.  The gap is about 1/2 inch.  How complex is a fix?
2. I've attached a picture of driver's side rear fender wheel well, looking towards the back of the 928. The fender 'lip' is rough, looks like a defect.  The long-term owner claims no body work ever... could this possibly be original, from the factory?   It really seems out of character with the rest of this original 928.

Again, I appreciate any advice offered.
Thank you.

The fuel tank filling fitting is part of the whole tank, so the whole tank must be moved for a proper fit.

The fuel tank his held in place by two metal straps.  My guess the tank alignment relative to the body is slightly off. By loosening the two straps, supporting the tank and slightly moving it it can be properly aligned.  It wouldn't be a big job.

It could be as simple as some sealing compound was sprayed during assembly and it was painted over.  Is the material hard or soft/spongy?

Thanks for the reply.
Fuel tank… makes sense alignment is off. I will check.
Fender lip… it’s hard compound. To me, it does look like sealer, possibly applied at factory. It  seems like a big quality miss if that’s true. If it’s a poor repair, it seems out of character with the rest of the car.

I don’t mind flaws with age.  I’ve gathered quite a few of my own as the years tick by!

Thank you,

Try pulling back the rubber boot around the fuel filler neck from inside the fuel door.  There is a metal tab that the fuel filler neck is mounted to there as well with a bolt.  (In the pic above posted by @Rich928, you'll see a silver mounting plate right by the threaded fuel filler neck.)  Ensure that the fuel filler neck is bolted down.  I do agree that it's likely that the fuel tank may need adjusting, but release this bolt by the fuel filler neck before doing so (and draining the tank makes the job easier.  If you have a siphon, you can go through the fuel level sender to pull fuel out of the tank if you don't want to dump from the fuel strainer.)

Thank you.
Sounds like a reasonable solution exists.  I'll let the forum know how it works out should I go through with the purchase.
