928 Head lights *~*~*~*FYI

Paul, if your car is a US car (and it appears to be) with 7" then your best bet is to go with H5's and the US glass. I think that may be the same plug as your 7" bulb. The H4 EURO connector will FOR SURE be different from your 7" plug.

The mounting hardware is the same for either 8" I believe, only the plugs (and thus the actual bulb) differ. I could be wrong on this so someone with more experience or a PET will have to chime in, but the H4 and H5 bulbs have different plug styles.

H4 bulbs have the same connector as standard USA sealed beams, H5 uses a different connector.

A couple of gotchas to watch for...

If you buy eBay 8" lights, be certain that they are not from a right-hand-drive country where they drive on the left. It is illegal, rude and dangerous to use these in the USA or other left-hand-drive country where we drive on the right side.

If you are temped to buy replacement bulbs that are labeled xenon, or put out blue light to look like HID lights, be aware that the only way to make a standard bulb look like an HID is to filter out the red light portion of the output. You get blue light, but you can't see worth a damn.

If you buy higher-power bulbs, be aware that the (slightly) increased light output comes at the cost of much shorter life.

Thanks James and Wally, I was planning on ordering directly from a Porsche dealer (best price I can find at just over $250 each). The part no is: 928 631 101 03 and is identified in the RoW catalog as for a Left Hand Drive vehicle and "H4". I'm fairly sure that they will interchange with no problem.

I could be mistaken, but I don't believe that H4s have ever been actually legalized by DOT in the US. That being said, a lot of folk on this and other forums have installed H4s. They provide a more focused and directable beam for nighttime driving.

Herman Koster has developed a wiring loom (sold through Roger at 928sRus) that is a plug and play to increase the overall wattage of the headlamps at high beam. I know it works by somehow having both low and high beam on at the same time during high beam
usage. I know no other specifics about it, but there were several folk at the last breakfast GTG (02-02-13) raving about how well it worked.

There are some 7" H4 options out there that work, but I would be VERY SURPRISED to find ANY dealer who would sell you an 8" ROW H4... Hell, when you bring a EURO car in and have it EPA and DOT certified the Registered Importer, BY LAW, must BREAK or send back to a EURO country ALL your lights!

The H4's are far far superior to the H5's! With that said I have the H4's with Herman's mod and it makes all the difference in the world. They are not entirely plug and play becasue they get power to the bulbs from a direct source on each side, not the electrical panel. What that means is they are getting the full 12VDC at the bulb, not the typical 9-10 volts after the normal voltage drop. And, yes both the low and high beams are on when on high beam. Contact Roger if you want the best!
