I'm back...what I was really looking for was information on how to get at the radio in the first place. I have had the molding off, and from what I see there is a lot more work to do before even having access to the radio.

anywhoooo, I am going to take some pics and that might give a better indication of what kind of help I need...patience ya'll...

Thanks for the input so far...and I will be here for a while now because I am going to seriously get into ridding myself of the issues this car has...with all your help of course...and the manual from time time to time...I find the manual to be lacking at times because it shows you stuff, but there is not a lot of "how to" info in it.

You can access by taking off the carpet panels on both sides of the center console off. There are screws holding them on. Once these are removed, you will be able to see the radio from the side. I did not have an original radio to remove so I don't have those details. But you should be able to pull it either by the u shaped pullers 928mac described or figure it out once you can get to it. If you take the panels off it will just make it easier to see what is going on. Plus you will likely need to do that anyway to put an aftermarket radio in, like plugging in the antenna or other wires etc.

Anyway, you may also end up in there to fix the vacuum switches and lines later....ha

I put in an Alpine unit and it fit fine.

On my 78, after removing the side panels from the center consol, I could access the back of the radio - it is screwed into a bracket - so simply inserting the pulling tool will not work if your early set up is like mine was. The rear of the radio is easy to access with the side panels off.

I got a new radio, and on install, the front moulding had to be trimmed - the newer DIN units are a tad wider than the original Blaupunkt units that were in the early cars.

I really should check in here more often.

Most times when I have to remove/install an early radio, I pull the center console. Yes, it sounds like more work, and yea, it can be, but the install is much better.
