MAF calibration check - repair was created by Rich928
Electronik Repair now offers calibration checking and repair for Porsche 928 Mass AirFlow meters (MAF).

All Porsche 928s [Euro/ROW 1984 - 1995 and US 1985 - 1995] use the same MAF. As the hot wire cycles through cleaning cycles and the circuits age, the calibration drifts - if it drifts too far the engine won't run properly.

(Sorry, we do not service 1980 - 1984 L-Jetronic AirFlow meters)

Is there a way to tell if your MAF is getting close to needing something done before the car won't start??

I might have to do that this winter too...better to be safe than sorry. I realize that mine is almost 25 years old, but is this something that should be done periodically to keep things running right??

It is a part that wears, so if never done, will likely offer an improvement.

The main failure modes of this type of MAF are

a) Hot wire gets too thin, system becomes out of calibration and engine doesn't run correctly. Since this is a very slow process, you as the driver don't notice any big change but slowly things just aren't right.

b) Circuit goes into thermal run-away - causes no run situation - sometimes no start but other times it will start but will not run long.
