Hi
New to here..
I have a 1984 928s 5 speed and ever since I owned it I've had a heavy clicking sound that I hear only in 1st gear. The dealer said they don't handle the older ones.
Any thoughts ? I live in Wisconsin near Milwaukee.

Sean... I have something similar in my '79. It only happens in first gear; sound like a one/rev click; goes away once it's out of first gear, right? Roger had me call Greg Brown. Sadly, Greg thinks it's a broken gear tooth. Rebuild is the only option. If you discover anything different, PLEASE let me know!

This probably isn't the answer, but just taking a stab at it... My axles (rear CVs) click and pop a lot at parking speeds in tight turns. Mine is likely due to the fact that the boots are all but missing, and there's little or no grease in them. Even though, CVs clicking in tight situations isn't usually a sign of anything bad, as far as I know.

Drain the transaxle oil and use a magnet or drain through an open weave cheese cloth to check for metal filings. The drain plug may have a magnet in the end that also will collect metal filings. If there are a bunch of chunks, the odds are high that you have a broken gear. Use 1st gear as little as possible, just enough to get to 2nd gear. This will minimize your problem if there is a broken gear.

To refill the transaxle, I like Redline synthetic Shockproof gear oil for my two 1979 5-speed 928s. It made the shifts smoother for me.
