I would assume that the lid must have an insulating layer, probably rubber. Otherwise, a roll-over accident would have disastrous consequences.

Wow. Now wouldn't that be something? It would be quite a chore to roll a 928 over I would think. With it's broad stance, short ride height, and 50/50 weight balance I would think it to be nearly impossible.

I can't believe that any competent business would overlook such an obvious possibility. It would be totally impossible to defend in court.

That is why I put a heavy rubber mat over my battery. I actually have to tuck it under the lip and there is no chance that when the lid is closed that it can slid away or that the lid can be contacted by the battery.
My lid is metal with no coating so I took the precaution to remedy that issue

I have never seen an original 1978 battery box cover - it would be interesting to see what Porsche did on this.
