I checked the PET as well and there is nothing regarding securing the battery. I also checked the owners manual and all it says is "the battery should be securely mounted"
Thanks for the photo of the securing bracket, in the battery box there is no place to "secure it" The research continues.

I have been driving mine for 10 years without a bracket, gravity seems to be doing just fine.

I use a deep cycle yellow top which the stock battery hold down will not work on. I have a very heavy rubber mat cut to the size of the box and the lid holds it down tight onto the battery.
I may get energetic one of these days and make something more professional but until then, this holds it so that there is no chance of it shorting against the lid or side

So what you're saying is that there is no bolt hole at the rear on the side of the batter box for the battery hold-down bolt?
If that's the case, maybe there wasn't anything besides gravity holding a '78 battery in place?
Someone with another '78 could help us out with this one. Anybody?
